Hunting Techniques and Tips
Scouting and Preparation
Scouting the hunting area before the season starts can significantly improve your success rate:
Identify Feeding and Roosting Areas: Look for fields with grain crops, such as sunflower or sorghum, as doves are attracted to these food sources. Locate nearby water sources and dense brush for roosting.
Pattern the Birds: Observe the doves' flight patterns to determine their travel routes between feeding and roosting areas. This information will help you set up in the right spot.
Setting Up for the Hunt
Proper setup is key to a successful hunt:
Decoys: Using decoys can attract doves to your location. Place them in small groups to mimic feeding birds. Motion decoys can add realism and increase effectiveness.
Blinds: Setting up a portable blind or using natural cover can help you remain concealed. Position yourself along the doves' flight paths for the best chance of success.
Shooting Techniques
Mastering your shooting technique is essential for hitting fast-moving doves:
Lead the Target: White-wing doves are swift and agile. To hit them, aim slightly ahead of their flight path. Practice your swing-through technique to maintain a smooth follow-through.
Stay Patient: Wait for the doves to come within range before taking a shot. Avoid sky-busting (shooting at doves that are too far away) as it decreases your chances of a clean hit.
